All about GIC Files
The GIC file type is primarily associated with Global Mapper.
What is a GIC file?
In its primary use, it is a Global Mapper Icon file for geospatial mapping. This form stores text data in UTF-16 (LE) and is used with GIS applications such as those from GeoMedia Intergraph, often supported by companies like Hexagon (Hexagon).
Another variant functions as a Jet database file where the internal structure is based on the JetDB format. Such files may be linked with conversion tools or viewed with utilities like HPGL Viewer, and are associated with the Jet Database Engine and Microsoft (Microsoft).
A third variant is used for recording scientific data. It is tied to measurements of Geomagnetically Induced Currents or used as a General Input Coordinates file for geophysical analysis.
When handling a GIC file, note that its proper use depends on its origin and internal format. To decide which software to use, check the file headers or open the file in a text editor to see if it contains plain text markers or database coding.
Consider the following points:
How to open GIC files
You need a suitable software like Global Mapper to open a GIC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GIC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GIC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert GIC files:
- Global Mapper
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. GIC files are often referred to as Global Mapper gis because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- BioWare Aurora Engine (Area) by BioWare Corp.In the BioWare Aurora engine, each Area in a module is described by three files. Each file has the same filename, but a different extension. The following are brief summaries of the area file types. ARE - static area information: area properties and tile layout. GIT - dynamic area information - game object instances and sound properties. GIC - area comments - contains toolset-only comments on game object instances. The file type are in BioWare's Generic File Format (GFF).
GIC format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the GIC files:
GIC is not a common file extension and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 40% of all GIC files store the data in the UTF-16 (LE) file format. UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are often between 98 bytes and 110 KB in size. The file type is old but is used even today. The keywords DMA 10x10 (Global) and WGS 1984 are typical for these files. Examples of file names are PICPL.gic. Such files sometimes refer to person-related data.
- 25% of all GIC files save the data in JetDB file format. The JetDB is a database format often used by Microsoft Access and Visual Basic programs. JET is short for Joint Engine Technology. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are 1 MB to 44 MB in size, with a median of 11 MB. The files contain the following words: Standard Jet DB and DU{C. The following filename is common: System.gic.
All the rest of the GIC files (35%) have different formats. These files are often connected to activsg or data. If you want to find out which format your GIC file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .gic file to analyze".
Technical Data for GIC File Extension
a gic data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with GIC files
- Associate the GIC file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest GIC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Global Mapper update.
- To make sure that your GIC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GIC file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
