What is a GLTF file?

GLTF files mostly belong to Blender by Blender. A file with GLTF extension is a 3D model saved using the GL Transmission format. Contents of GLTF model file consist of 3D scenes, node hierarchy, materials, descriptors, and animation data stored as text in JSON format. Some of this data are embedded in the GLTF file whereas non-embedded resources are referenced from within the file. The GLTF format is often used as a lightweight format for bundling and transferring 3D assets between applications. Designers and engineers also use GLTF format to embed 3D interactive content in web pages because of the optimized runtime and upload/download speed they provide.

How to open a GLTF file

You need a suitable software like Blender from Blender to open a GLTF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GLTF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GLTF file directly in the browser:. How to convert GLTF files to OBJ, STL, PLY, 3DS, FBX, STP, ...

1. To do so, click the "Choose your .gltf file to view" button above.
2. After your file is opened in browser,
3. click "Save as..." in the menu.
4. Then select the 3D format (e.g. STL, OBJ, 3DS, X, X3D, STP, PLY, ...) you want.
5. Download the converted file.

GLTF file format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the GLTF files looks like this:

The GLTF file extension is used very often and mainly uses a special format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 95% of all GLTF files are GL Transmission Format files, which are using the popular JSON file format. JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data−interchange format. It is easy for humans to read and write. It is easy for machines to parse and generate. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The files are on average 100 KB in size and range from 5 KB to 8 MB. The file type is relatively new. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as "accessors": [, count, "componentType": 5126, "max": [ and "bufferView": 2. The following filename is common: scene.gltf. These files are often associated with bplanner and project.
• 3% of all GLTF files have the same signature glTF. The files are on average 19 MB in size and range from 530 KB to 28 MB. The keywords JSON, glTF, name, accessors, bufferView, componentType, count, SCALAR, asset, generator, type and version are typical for these files.
