What is an FBX file?

FBX files mostly belong to 3DS Max by Autodesk. The FBX file extension is based on Filmbox (FBX), an open-standard, platform-independent 3D file format file format owned by Autodesk and used as an asset exchange technology for providing interoperability and high-fidelity data exchange between various 3D design software and other digital content creation programs. 3D design data exported/imported as an FBX retains its original fidelity and functionality. As such, it can be opened by most 3D software such as 3DS Max, Maya, and Cheetah3D. Such FBX files may also be converted to other formats with converter utilities provided by Autodesk. The FBX file extension is also associated with ArcGIS, a geographic data visualization/analysis software which stores spatial index data for read-only datasets in FBX files.

How to open FBX files

You need a suitable software like 3DS Max to open an FBX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FBX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FBX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert FBX files:

  1. 3DS Max by Autodesk
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. FBX files are often referred to as 3DS Max 3d images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. ArcGIS (read-only datasets) by ESRI
ArcGIS, formerly ArcView is a geographic data analysis and visualization software. The program provides interfaces for data collection/management and for mapping and rendering such data in 3D. The FBX file that is created by ArcGIS contains spatial index data of read-only datasets. This file format is classified as GIS. Related links: ArcGIS
  3. AutoCAD (3D assets) by Autodesk
AutoCAD is an architecture design software mostly used for the purpose of city planning, technical drawing, modelling buildings, etc. The program can open FBX assets created with FBX software development kit. This file format is classified as 3D Image. Related links: What is Autodesk FBX Technology, Adaptable file format for 3D animation software, FBX, Autodesk FBX Converters and Plug-ins Archive, FBX
  4. Maya (3D assets) by Autodesk
Maya is a professional level 3D animation and modelling software with an elaborate toolkit for creating and rendering photo-realistic 3D virtual worlds, scenes, and even complex 3D characters. 3D assets saved in FBX format can be opened with Maya. This file format is classified as 3D Image. Related links: What is Autodesk FBX Technology, Adaptable file format for 3D animation software, FBX, Autodesk FBX Converters and Plug-ins Archive, FBX

FBX file extension format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. In the following you will find our evaluation of the FBX files:

The FBX extension is very commonly used. This FBX file itself is among the most popular common file types and predominantly uses a uniform format. But the following two file formats are common:

All other FBX files (3%) have no consistent format. These files sometimes refer to kitchen, export, sunglasses, building, russian, button, glass, samba, scene, table, body, head, idle, pose or scan. If you want to find out what your FBX file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

an fbx 3D asset is a special file format by Autodesk and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with FBX files

  • Associate the FBX file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open 3d assets. Because only the current version supports the latest FBX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Autodesk manufacturer website after an available 3DS Max update.
  • To make sure that your FBX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .FBX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
