Opening a GMI File
The GMI file type is primarily associated with Game engine.
What is a GMI file?
For the game interface variant, the file is processed by the game engine to display visual elements during play. The geospatial version is integrated into CAD software for mapping and design purposes. Opening these files typically requires the intended application; a generic text editor may show raw data but not the formatted interface or design.
Usage Tips:
How to open a GMI file
You need a suitable software like Game engine to open a GMI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GMI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GMI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert GMI files:
- Game engine
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. GMI files are often referred to as Game engine games because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- GPS Tuner (Map Calibration Data) by Megalith-SystemsGPS Tuner is an off-road navigation software for Pocket PC devices. While most car navigation software gives you the possibility of planning your route based on a road network, GPS Tuner gives you the ability of navigation where the roads end. GPS Tuner is an tool for hiking, geocaching, boating, flying, driving and many other sporting activities. GMI file extension format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the GMI files looks like this:
The GMI file extension is rather rarely used and includes different formats for the applicable programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 60% of all GMI files have the same signature 00 00 02 00 00 00 00 00. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are 130 KB to 260 KB in size, with a median of 260 KB. This is an old file type which is rarely used today. Some examples of file names are LoginMain01.gmi. These files are attributed to inven, login, bgui, logo, loading, chatwin, bsmith and camp.
- 20% of all GMI files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "[GMIFILE_ASCII]" at the beginning. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The file size is in the range of 1 KB to 110 KB. The keywords EXTENT, [GMIFILE_ASCII], _INDEX !!!!!, _VERSION 2, _FILETYPE TER, COSYSVER NN2000, COSYS EUR89 32, COSYS_EPSG 25832 and GUID are typical for these files. Examples of file names are Gemini_VA.gmi. These files are attributed to gemini, innm and built.
All other GMI files (20%) have no uniform format, the following 3 formats exist: GPS Tuner map calibration data. Files like these are sometimes linked to fetal, maingui, button or simbol. Just click the "Choose your .gmi file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your GMI file is.
Technical Data for GMI File Extension
a gmi Game resource file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with GMI files
- Associate the GMI file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open game resource files. Because only the current version supports the latest GMI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Game engine update.
- To make sure that your GMI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GMI file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
