A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the GM1 files:

The file type with the extension 'GM1' includes different formats for the applicable programs. The file formats most commonly found in GM1 files are:

• 50% of all GM1 files start with the bytes 01 00 00 00 01 00 00 00, which are crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are on average 84 KB in size and range from 17 KB to 720 KB. This is an old file type which is rarely used today. An example of a file name is anim_armourer.gm1 or anim_baker.gm1. • 20% of all GM1 files use the popular GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. They consist of unreadable binary data. A typical file size is 270 KB. The following filename is common: AUTOSAVE.GM1 or NEWGAME.gm1.
