Opening GSD Files

The GSD file type is primarily associated with Profinet Commander.

GSDFile Extension GSD
File extension: GSD
File type:  networked device profile/configuration

What is a GSD file?

GSD files mostly belong to Profinet Commander by Panoramix. GSD is the filename extension of files containing smaller pieces of large files that have been split using GSplit file splitter. GSD is also the native file format for storing images (designs) created with the Silhouette family of graphics design software. GSD filename extension is associated with an XML-based Generic Station Description format used to store descriptions and configurations of hardware stations such as the PROFIBUS DP (Decentralized Peripherals), PROFINET IO, and Process Automation devices. These GSD files are written in a manner that allows users to transfer and import device profiles into various software configuration tools such as ProfinetCommander. You may also view the contents of these files with plain text editors. A different GSD file format is the native format for storing HOOMD-blue particle simulation software package data. GSD is also the filename extension of vector images (drawings/signs) saved in a vector graphics format developed by GraphTec.

How can I open a GSD file?

You need a suitable software like Profinet Commander to open a GSD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GSD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GSD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert GSD files:

  1. Profinet Commander by Panoramix
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. GSD files are often referred to as Profinet Commander settings because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. GSplit (piece) by G.D.G.
GSplit is a lightweight program for splitting large files into smaller fragments called "pieces". By splitting a large file into smaller fragments, users may store or transmit large files on platforms such as email applications with file size restraints. The program saves the "pieces" of a file in GSD files. This file format is classified as Data.
  3. HOOMD-blue (trajectories of HOOMD system state) by University of Michigan
HOOMD-blue is a particle simulation software package used in Python programs. The trajectories of the HOOMD-blue system state is stored as binary data in a GSD file. This file format is classified as Data.
  4. Professional Draw (drawing) by Gold Disk
Professional Draw was a vector graphics design software suite. It saved vector-based drawings in GSD, IFF, or PostScript formats compatible with PostScript and HPGL-compatible printers and plotters. This file format is classified as Vector Image.
  5. ROBO Master (vinyl design) by GraphTec
ROBO Master was a design software used to create, outline, and cut vinyl designs which are fabricated with the Craft ROBO plotter. GSD was its default vector graphics format for storing simple objects, text, and graphics. This file format is classified as Vector Image.
  6. Silhouette Studio (image or sliceform design) by Silhouette
Silhouette Studio is a graphics design software for creating vector-based drawings and sliceforms which can be 2D/3D-printed, cut, or exported to other image formats. Sliceform designs and vector images created with Silhouette Studio are stored in GSD files. This file format is classified as Vector Image.

GSD file extension format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the GSD files:

The GSD file type is a very commonly used file extension and has no uniform or dominant file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

All the rest of the GSD files (70%) have different formats, such as PDF, silhouette, tYNSCFF and GSD. These files are often connected to christmas, sliceform, genesis, live, spln or tree. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your GSD file!

a gsd networked device profile/configuration is a special file format by Panoramix and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with GSD files

  • Associate the GSD file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open networked device profile/configurations. Because only the current version supports the latest GSD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Panoramix manufacturer website after an available Profinet Commander update.
  • To make sure that your GSD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .GSD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
