What is an EDS file?

EDS files mostly belong to Studio 5000 by Rockwell Automation. An EDS file is a datasheet containing all details of an electronic device in a network that uses Common Industrial Protocols (CIP) such as DeviceNet and CANopen. The contents of this file are saved as text. They include information such as the sheet's version number, device description, creation/modification date and time etc. Programmable logic controllers manufactured by Siemens and Rockwell Automation use this file. Another type of EDS file contains biomedical data collected using StepOne laboratory instrument. Such an EDS file can be opened and read using StepOne software for Windows desktop.

How to open an EDS file

You need a suitable software like Studio 5000 to open an EDS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EDS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EDS file directly in the browser:. The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. The EDS file extension is very common and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The file formats most commonly found in EDS files are:

• 65% of all EDS files use the ZIP algorithm, the EDS file contains a number of compressed files. EDS files contain from 152 to 190 compressed files. File names inside are always [Content_Types].xml, \apldbio\, \apldbio\sds\messages.log, \apldbio\sds\plate_setup.xml and \apldbio\sds\tcprotocol.xml.
