What is a GWC file?

GWC files mostly belong to Wherigo Player. The GWC file is not a single file type but a label used for several different data containers. The most common form is the Wherigo Cartridge, a file that contains interactive geocaching content for use with a Wherigo Player.

How to open GWC files

75% of all GWC files have the same signature 02 0A 43 41 52 54 00. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. A typical file size is 360 KB. The file type is very recent. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. CART and Geocache. These files can be linked to reverse, cache, wherigo, quest, johnnys, uhodni, baltibaltai, geofigu, taurage, walking, dragon, island, first, ball, love and tour.
20% of all GWC files start with the bytes CRCVALUE= crucial for this file format. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The files are on average 26 KB in size and range from 23 KB to 49 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as CRCVALUE, 1Wx}t//, 1~w1R~, 2--Stvx, Btcxp, Gtcbx~, Rctpetu1Ex, Rctpetu1Upet, wxvdcpex~, Dbtc1Apbbf and Dbtc1_p!t,*. The following filename is common: filename.gwc. Files like these are sometimes connected to cisco, backup and modem.
