What is a GWF file

GWF files mostly belong to GWpy. GWF files are not a single file type but rather a set of formats used in different technical areas.

Gravitational Wave Frame: These files are used in astrophysics. They store data frames from gravitational wave experiments and are commonly processed with the GWpy tools. You can learn more at GWpy homepage.

Grid Workload Format: In some contexts, GWF files store workload and log data used in grid computing, for instance by utilities like get-clean-logs.py.

How do you open GWF files?

To find out what program is needed to open GWF files, you need to determine the file format. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. • 15% of all GWF files start with the bytes # Generated by get-clean-logs.py ($Revision: 0.1$) crucial for this file format. The content also consists of readable text fragments, which can be viewed with the help of a text editor. The file size is in the range of 19 MB to 210 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as # ----------, # System info, # System name, # Field description from left to right, # Format documentation: Grid Workload Format (http://gwa.ewi.tudelft.nl/), # Generated by get-clean-logs.py ($Revision: 0.1$) on 2007-02-05 18:30:04.796000, # Generated by get-clean-logs.py ($Revision: 0.1$) on 2007-05-24 11:59:33.687000 and Laboratoire de Phy. A usual file name is anon_jobs.gwf. Files like these are sometimes connected to anon and jobs.
