What is an HDL file?

HDL files mostly belong to HDL Compiler. HDL files are Hardware Description Language source files that define digital circuits and their behavior.

To view or edit HDL files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. The HDL file extension is not found very often and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in HDL files:

• 65% of all HDL files are based on the popular Source file format. A source code is the set of instructions written by a programmer using a computer programming language like JavaScript, C++ or Basic. This code is translated into machine language by a compiler. The translated result is called app, program or executable. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The files are 310 bytes to 2 KB in size, with a median of 460 bytes. It is a modern file type. The files contain the following words: // and the book "The Elements of Computing Systems", // This file is part of www.nand2tetris.org, // by Nisan and Schocken, MIT Press, File name and projects. Some examples of file names are And.hdl or ALU.hdl. Such files sometimes refer to dmux, computer, adder, memory, register, sequential, logic, notes and half.
• 9% of all HDL files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "CHIP " at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. A typical file size is 680 bytes. The keywords CHIP, PARTS, OUT out and Nand are typical for these files.
