Opening HIR Files
The HIR file type is primarily associated with Image Viewer.
What is a HIR file
- Lithography Data: some of HIR files are created to hold lithography instructions for devices such as the Raith 150 Two system. These files carry data that supports processes like Heidelberg Ion Beam Lithography. More details can be found at Raith.
- Impulse Response Data: some of these files use a JSON format to store line impulse response information. This format is associated with the Line 6 Helix Native system for processing audio effects. Visit Line 6 software for further information.
- Binary Resource: A small portion uses a binary format to hold hierarchical image resource data, which may be used in specialized image management or resource systems.
FilExt.com tips: For a user with an HIR file, the primary task is to determine which type it is. For example, if the file contains raw image data, renaming the extension to .jpg might allow use of standard image viewers. In contrast, lithography or impulse response files require the corresponding specialized software to open and view the embedded data.
How to open a HIR file
You need a suitable software like Image Viewer to open a HIR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your HIR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a HIR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

HIR file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below you will find our evaluation of the HIR files:
The file type with the extension 'HIR' is mainly used by one program with a specific format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 85% of all HIR files internally utilize the JPG file format. JPEG is the standard image format for lossy and compressed image data. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are on average 800 KB in size and range from 450 KB to 2 MB. It is a modern file type. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as JFIF and Exif. Examples of file names are 20180601_A.hir or 20180601_0001.hir.
- 4% of all HIR files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "DH" at the beginning. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. A typical file size is 2 KB.
All other HIR files (11%) have no consistent format, such as C64 Hires bitmap and JSON. They are often associated with music. If you want to find out which format your HIR file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .hir file to view this image".
