Opening an HJT File
The HJT file type is primarily associated with TreePad.
What is an HJT file?
When you open an HJT file, you are accessing a structured document. There are two common variations of this file type: one is a standard TreePad document and the other is an outline file used by TreePad Lite. Both use a similar tree structure to organize data efficiently.
Key details compiled by FilExt.com:
- The file contains a hierarchy of notes and outlines.
- It is specifically designed for use with TreePad software.
- It organizes data into nested, expandable nodes.
- Only TreePad or compatible applications will display its content correctly.
FilExt.com note: Use TreePad to view, edit, and manage these files.
How to open HJT files
You need a suitable software like TreePad to open an HJT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your HJT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a HJT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert HJT files:
- TreePad
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. HJT files are often referred to as TreePad data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- TreePad (Hypertext Database File) by FreebyteTreePad is a small personal database program, only 465 Kb in size. It allows you to store notes, E-mails, text, hyperlinks, etc. into one or multiple databases. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 3C 68 6A 2D 54 72 65 65 70 61 64 20 76 65 72 73 69 6F 6E 20, ASCII: .hj-Treepad.version, or for newer versions, Hex: 3C 54 72 65 65, ASCII: .Tree.
HJT format details:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the HJT files:
The HJT file extension is not common and is primarily used by a single program. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 95% of all HJT files belong to TreePAD document. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The files are 1 KB to 1 MB in size, with a median of 100 KB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <node>, dt=Text, <end node> 5P9i0s8y19Z and <Treepad version 3.0>. Such HJT files store data about treepad and notes, and frequently comprise personal data.
All other HJT files (5%) have no consistent format. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your HJT file!

How to solve problems with HJT files
- Associate the HJT file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open documents. Because only the current version supports the latest HJT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available TreePad update.
- To make sure that your HJT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
