What is an HMF file?

HMF files mostly belong to HOOPS Exchange. HOOPS Metafile Format files can refer to different specialized data types.

HOOPS 3D Model: These files store 3D model data used for visualization and design. They are part of the HOOPS Exchange system. For more details, see TechSoft3D.

HiBoard Meeting File: In this case the HMF file is a ZIP-compressed archive that holds whiteboard meeting data used by Hi-Think Whiteboard applications.

Huawei Mobile Firmware: These files contain firmware for Huawei mobile devices. They work with tools such as the Huawei Firmware Extractor and Update Tool. Additional information is available at DC-Unlocker.

How to open an HMF file

You need a suitable software like HOOPS Exchange to open an HMF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your HMF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a HMF file directly in the browser:. To view or edit HMF files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our analysis of the HMF files produces the following result:

HMF is not a commonly used file extension and covers different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in HMF files:

• 50% of all HMF files are HOOPS 3D Metafile Format files. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. A typical file size is 6 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. HOOPS, ;; HMF V1.25 TEXT, (Windows x64), Color and Value. A usual file name is eModel.hmf. Files like these are about sequence, velocity and animation.
• 10% of all HMF files internally use the ZIP format, the HMF file contains a number of compressed files. A typical number of included files is 6. File names are e.g. 0_new.obj, 1_new.obj, 1.obj, 2_new.obj and order.obj. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. The average file size is 450 KB with most files being between 60 KB and 1 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. $3/=)?, order.obj[, A&9?W/#, OVbY, {W110G10& and ~iIf. The following filename is common: 20180601WhiteBoard01.hmf or 20180601WhiteBoard02.hmf. Files like these are sometimes connected to board, white and whiteboard.

The remaining 40% of all HMF files are files with no common format, often e.g. SQL, XML, config, Found, HIGE and Blender. These files sometimes refer to update, accelerate, band, boot or logo. Just click the "Choose your .hmf file to view" button on this page to find out what your HMF file is.
