All about HMI Files
The HMI file type is primarily associated with Nextion Editor.
What is an HMI file
Usage Cases:
How do you open HMI files?
You need a suitable software like Nextion Editor to open an HMI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your HMI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a HMI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert HMI files:
- Nextion Editor
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. HMI files are often referred to as Nextion Editor data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

HMI file extension format:
To find out what program is needed to open HMI files, you need to determine the file format. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our analysis of the HMI files produces the following result:
The file type with the extension 'HMI' covers a large number of different file formats. But the following two file formats are common:
- 20% of all HMI files start with the bytes 00 00 crucial for this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are on average 1 MB in size and range from 170 KB to 22 MB. The file type is relatively new. The file name Tutorial4.HMI or WeatherStation.HMI is characteristic of these files. These files are attributed to station, weather, internet, nextion, cutter, radio and dash.
- 10% of all HMI files use the same file format, which have the signature 01 0F 00 00. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. Most of these files are 11 MB to 30 MB in size. A usual file name is PROJECT_1.hmi. Such HMI files store data about backup.
All other HMI files (70%) have different formats, often e.g. Human Machine Interfaces MIDI Format and Humax. Files like these are sometimes linked to delta, slaepp, slhlp, woman, page, sinumerik, content, update, alarm, model or tube. If you want to find out which format your HMI file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .hmi file to analyze".
Technical Data for HMI File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.
EXEFile: winamp.exe
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\Winamp\Winamp.exe %1
an hmi configuration/project file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with HMI files
- Associate the HMI file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open configuration/project files. Because only the current version supports the latest HMI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Nextion Editor update.
- To make sure that your HMI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .HMI file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
