What is a TFT file?

TFT files mostly belong to ImageJ. TFT files are used in different technical areas and their contents depend on the source application.

Microscope image files: Many TFT files are microscope images. These files often use BZ2 compression and are used with ImageJ to analyze detailed scientific images.

Nextion HMI display files: some of these files serve as display configuration files for Nextion human-machine interfaces. They are edited using the Nextion Editor and contain data to drive touchscreen display elements.

How to open a TFT file

You need a suitable software like ImageJ to open a TFT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our analysis of the TFT files produces the following result:

TFT is a very widely used file extension. The file type includes various formats for various programs. But the following two file formats are common:

• 45% of all TFT files internally utilize the BZ2 file format. The BZ2 format is used by the bzip2 command in Linux to compress and decompress files. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The average file size is 4 MB with most files being between 880 KB and 9 MB in size. It is a modern file type. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as BZh91AY&SY. An example of a file name is 1.tft. Files like these are about sample, scale, side, interposerw, custandoff, flipped, after and acet.
• 15% of all TFT files start with the bytes 00 01, which are crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are on average 2 MB in size and range from 320 KB to 8 MB. These files are often associated with display, nextion, enhanced, nxtgfx, screen and inch.
