What is a HYS file

HYS files mostly belong to Hysitron Triboscan. HYS files are specialized data files generated during nanoindentation testing. They are usually produced by systems such as Hysitron Triboscan and other Hysitron instruments (like the Triboindenter and TI 950 Nanoindenter) to record load-displacement measurements and related experimental details.

Nanoindentation Data: Most HYS files store raw nanoindentation data used to analyze material properties.

Hysteresis Loop Data: Some HYS files contain hysteresis loop information, used for examining energy dissipation in tests. Such files are often managed with OriginPro software.

To view these files properly, you will need the vendor-specific software. For nanoindentation files, use the Hysitron Triboscan software provided by Hysitron/Bruker (Bruker). For hysteresis loop data, the corresponding software from OriginLab (OriginLab) is appropriate.

How to open a HYS file

You need a suitable software like Hysitron Triboscan to open a HYS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. HYS file format details:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the HYS files produces the following result:

The HYS file extension is not found very often and covers different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

50% of all HYS files use the same file format, which have the signature 9V. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. Most of these files are 39 KB to 330 KB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. 15% of all HYS files start with the magic bytes DV, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. HYS files can be up to 2 MB in size, but are often around 43 KB - 180 KB.
