What is an IMY file?

IMY files mostly belong to Sony Ericsson iMelody. IMY files serve more than one purpose. Their main role is as iMelody ringtone files used to store simple tone instructions for mobile phones, especially those by Sony Ericsson. These files contain text-based note sequences that a phone translates into a ringtone.
Other IMY files pack different data. Some use ZIP compression to bundle Python code (a Chameleon packaging format used with Kivy, see Kivy). Others depend on GZIP compression and act as game asset files or video game data formats linked to Illusion’s My Room (Illusion) and Inkscape (Inkscape).

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. IMY is not a common file extension and predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most common formats are as follows:

70% of all IMY files are associated with iMELODY sound/music. These files contain text and words, not binary data. Most of these files are 110 bytes to 320 bytes in size. The file type is old but is used even today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. BEGIN:IMELODY, FORMAT:CLASS1.0, VERSION:1.2, BEAT, END:IMELODY and COMPOSER. The file name s1imy01.imy is characteristic of these files. Such files sometimes refer to alert.
10% of all IMY files have the same signature 00 00 02 00 00 00 00 00. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. IMY files can be up to 4 MB in size, but are often around 1 MB - 4 MB. Files like these have the following tags: alic.
