What is an INDT file?

INDT files mostly belong to InDesign by Adobe. An INDT file is a design project template created by InDesign graphics design and desktop publishing software. A design contains a predefined layout, placeholder text/images, objects, and settings which may be used as scaffolding to quickly create a design document (INDD) without starting from scratch. INDT files are usually bundled with an InDesign installation. However, a user can save a design as a reusable template using the "Save As" feature in InDesign's "File" menu.

What to Do When a .INDT File Fails to Open

A .INDT file can originate from different applications and isn't universally openable.

1. Identify the Source: If received from a graphic designer, a print shop, or a publishing workflow, it is likely an Adobe InDesign Template.
2. Check the Header: Open the file in a hex editor to inspect its first bytes:
   • 06 06 ED F5 indicates an InDesign file.
   • PK suggests a zipped archive.
   • Readable XML implies a structured data file.
3. Use the Original Software: You usually need the original program to open it properly. Try Adobe InDesign or Adobe InCopy, but if unsure, ask the sender.
