Opening an IP File
The IP file type is primarily associated with Inquisit.
What is an IP file?
Your IP file may represent different types of content depending on its origin.
It can be a compressed archive using the ZIP format that contains a questionnaire or assessment package developed with Inquisit. This package bundles several related files into one container.
Alternatively, an IP file might hold MPEG-4 video fragments, storing parts of a video that require a media player to view.
There is also a case where the file is used for an interactive physics simulation, designed to run in educational settings. More on these simulations is available at Physics Interactives.
For details on the questionnaire packages, refer to Millisecond Inquisit.
Key points to note:
FilExt.com note: Identify the file’s origin to choose the correct software for opening and viewing its content.
How do you open IP files?
You need a suitable software like Inquisit to open an IP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

IP file format details:
To view or edit IP files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the IP files produces the following result:
The IP file extension is not common and includes different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 40% of all IP files use the ZIP format, so several files are compressed and saved in one IP file. Primarily 1 to 90 files are included. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. A typical file size is 960 KB. Such IP files store data about process.
- 25% of all IP files are using the well-known MP4 file format to store the data. MP4 is a multimedia container format used to store video and audio and allows streaming over the Internet. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are often between 8 MB and 280 MB in size. The files contain the following words: lmvhd, \tkhd, trak, 3gp43gp53g2a, ftyp3gp4 and moov. The following filename is common: 1578071087-98614959.ip or 1578071145-72764861.ip.
All other IP files (35%) have different formats, such as Interactive Physics data. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your IP file!

an ip compressed archive is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with IP files
- Associate the IP file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open compressed archives. Because only the current version supports the latest IP file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Inquisit update.
- To make sure that your IP file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .IP file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
