What is an IPL file?

IPL files mostly belong to Game Map Editor.

IPL files serve several specialized roles. In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and similar titles, these files often act as game map files that store item placement, object coordinates, terrain details, and occlusion data. They let modding tools change map layouts and in‐game object positions.

How to open an IPL file

You need a suitable software like Game Map Editor to open an IPL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. IPL file format:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. The IPL file type is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The file formats most commonly found in IPL files are:

• 40% of all IPL files start with the bytes # IPL ge, which are crucial for this file format. These files contain text and words, not binary data. The average file size is 33 KB with most files being between 3 KB and 83 KB in size. This is an old file type which is rarely used today. The keywords inst, file and generated from are typical for these files. Examples of file names are Audiozon.ipl or paths.ipl. Files like these have the following tags: airport, countn, industnw, cull and nbtm.
• 8% of all IPL files belong to IPL Image Sequence bitmap. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. Most of these files are 500 KB to 110 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as iiii, 100gdata and 100fdata.

All other IPL files (52%) have no uniform format, the following 8 formats can be found: ZIP, XML, CASIO, LPI, bnry and inst. The category is stream, countrye, lahills or schunk.
