What is a J2K file?

J2K files mostly belong to Photoshop by Adobe. J2K filename extension is used by image files encoded with JPEG 2000 file format and image compression standard. The contents of a typical J2K file includes graphics data, 16-bit color information, and alpha channels in the image. A J2K file can also contain high dynamic range image information with up to 38 bits per component. Programs such as XnView , QuickTime, Photoshop, and PaintShop may be used to view images saved in J2K files. JPEG 2000 has a scalable codestream that can be decoded in multiple ways. The scalability of J2K files and their ability to store more data than standard JPEG images make them suitable for photo editing.

How to open a J2K file

You need a suitable software like Photoshop to open a J2K file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your J2K file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a J2K file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

J2K file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the J2K files looks like this:

J2K is seldom used as a file extension and is primarily used by a single program. The file formats most commonly found in J2K files are:

How to solve problems with J2K files

  • Associate the J2K file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open images. Because only the current version supports the latest J2K file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe manufacturer website after an available Photoshop update.
