What is a JP2 file?

JP2 files mostly belong to Preview by Apple. A JP2 file contains an image encoded using JPEG 2000 core compression standard. Apart from graphics, a JP2 file may also contain resolution, bit depth, color space, and image metadata. JP2 files may be used to store map images (remote sensing), digitized scans, MRI and CT scans, internet graphics, biometrics, and cinema graphics. JPEG 2000, the compression standard for JP2 images, uses a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) compression technique that supports lossy or lossless compression. Some image processing software that may be used to open JP2 images include Preview, IMAGINE, Photoshop, XnView, and CorelDRAW. Jeoparty II, a presentation software used for academic purposes, saves presentations in a different JP2 format.

How can I open a JP2 file?

You need a suitable software like Preview to open a JP2 file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your JP2 file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a JP2 file directly in the browser:. • 90% of all JP2 files are associated with JPEG 2000 bitmap. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. JP2 files can be up to 1 GB in size, but are often around 19 KB - 30 MB. The file type is old but is used even today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as ihdr, ftypjp2, colr, jp2c and -jp2h. Such files sometimes refer to ignf, image, orig, scan, color, jpeg, manual, jimlr and frad.
• 3% of all JP2 files start with the bytes ÿOÿQ crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. JP2 files can be up to 32 MB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 10 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as @@HHPHHPHHPHHPHHP and Creator: JasPer Version 1.900.1. Files like these are sometimes connected to tiffanny.
