Opening JFM Files
The JFM file type is primarily associated with JetForm Designer.
What is a JFM file?
In one use case, these files are created by JetForm Designer and serve as internal form databases. They store details such as layout settings, input fields, and other configuration data that drive the behavior of digital forms. This use is sometimes known as a JetForm FormFlow Data file or simply a JetForm form file.
In another use case, JFM files hold Java font metrics. Here, they capture measurements like kerning and glyph sizing used by design tools. In some instances the file is also called a JFlap Machine Definition File, a reference seen with software like JFormDesigner.
These files are not meant to be manually edited since they contain binary and metadata structures essential for form layout or font rendering.

JFM format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below is our analysis of the JFM files:
An JFM file has no uniform or dominant file format. The file formats most commonly found in JFM files are:
- 20% of all JFM files start with the bytes 03 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 crucial for this file format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 16 KB to 32 KB. It is a modern file type. The file name d.jfm or CacheStorage.jfm is characteristic of these files.
- 3% of all JFM files have the same signature 2C 5F. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. A typical file size is 15 KB. A common filename is SHFM160L.jfm. Such files are related to shfm.
All other JFM files (77%) have no consistent format, frequently e.g. JFM. Sometimes used for store, intercept, data, catalog, ntds or database. Just click the "Choose your .jfm file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your JFM file is.

How to solve problems with JFM files
- Associate the JFM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest JFM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available JetForm Designer update.
- To make sure that your JFM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
