What is a JRS file?

JRS files mostly belong to Exchange Server by Microsoft. A JRS file contains a reserve transaction log generated by Microsoft applications which are based on Extensible Storage Engine technology. Exchange Server email and calendaring software is one of such programs. It uses a JRS file to save reserve logs which mark the end-of-queue database when the hard disk containing Exchange Server logs runs out of space.

JRS files can originate from different programs and aren't universally openable by standard applications.

1. Identify the Source: If the file comes from an IT administrator, it is likely a Microsoft Exchange Server reserve transaction log. If it comes from a data analyst, it may be a JasperReports Server file.
2. Check the Header: Inspect the first few bytes using a text editor or hex viewer:
   • Unreadable binary data often indicates a database transaction log (like Exchange).
   • Readable text or XML suggests a configuration or reporting file.
3. Use the Original Software: The original program is usually required to process the file. Likely tools include Microsoft Exchange Server or JasperReports. If uncertain, ask the sender.
