Opening a JPI File
The JPI file type is primarily associated with Jenkins.
What is a JPI file?
AIS Data File: Some JPI files contain Automatic Identification System data. These files store GPS track logs and other maritime data used by applications such as JPIDecoder.
JPEG Image File: In rarer cases, a JPI extension is applied to a file holding JPEG image data; this format may be used by Java-based image tools or graphic software like Adobe Photoshop.
- Jenkins Plugin: Plugin archive for Jenkins CI/CD environments.
- AIS Data: GPS track log files for maritime tracking.
- JPEG Image: Image file associated with Java plug-in systems.
FilExt.com tip: To inspect a Jenkins plugin JPI file, you can use any ZIP extraction tool. For AIS data, use a dedicated decoder, and for JPEG images, an image viewer will do.
How to open JPI files
You need a suitable software like Jenkins to open a JPI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your JPI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a JPI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert JPI files:
- Jenkins
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. JPI files are often referred to as Jenkins plugins because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

JPI file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our analysis of the JPI files produces the following result:
JPI is seldom used as a file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The file formats most commonly found in JPI files are:
- 55% of all JPI files use ZIP compression, so several files are compressed and saved in one JPI file. A typical number of included files is 12. Common included file names are \META-INF\MANIFEST.MF, \META-INF\maven\, \META-INF\maven\org.jenkins-ci.plugins\ and \WEB-INF\licenses.xml. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. The average file size is 580 KB with most files being between 45 KB and 5 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: META-INF/PK and META-INF/MANIFEST.MF. credentials.jpi or ssh-credentials.jpi is a typical file name. Files like these are sometimes connected to blueocean, directory, active, plugin, pipeline, editor, automation and choice.
- 35% of all JPI files use the same file format, which have the signature $U,. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are often between 22 KB and 1 MB in size. The keywords $P, 2*6E, $H,0*54 and 999999999 are typical for these files. The following filename is common: U20180601.JPI.
All other JPI files (10%) have no consistent format, often e.g. JPG. Just click the "Choose your .jpi file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your JPI file is.
Technical Data for JPI File Extension
a jpi plugin archive is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with JPI files
- Associate the JPI file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open plugin archives. Because only the current version supports the latest JPI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Jenkins update.
- To make sure that your JPI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .JPI file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
