What is a KIM file?

KIM files mostly belong to Keyman. KIM files are used in several ways. Their content and use depend on the originating software. You may find them as follows:

• Video File / Korean Input Method Data: This type may hold video content or data for a Korean Input Method. It needs a compatible media player or specialized input software.
• Keyman Input Method / Map File: Some KIM files work with the Keyman system for multilingual text input and may also store Garmin Mobile XT map data. Visit Keyman for details.
• Lecture Presentation / Knowledge Inspiration Map: Certain KIM files serve as presentation documents, sometimes called a Knowledge Inspiration Map. More information is at Kinook.

How to open a KIM file

You need a suitable software like Keyman to open a KIM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your KIM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a KIM file directly in the browser:. KIM file format:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the KIM files is as follows:

The KIM file type is a very commonly used file extension and mainly uses a special format. The following file formats are most commonly found in KIM files:

• 70% of all KIM files start with the bytes 01 78 DA, which are crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. Most of these files are 11 MB to 13 MB in size. The file type was created recently. The files contain the following words: \dnM. The file name vpr-fl7.kim or vpr-fl11.kim is characteristic of these files.
• 3% of all KIM files start with the magic bytes 88 53 96 00, which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. KIM files are between 4.3 MB and 4.3 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: "u%uM, %g$gDrN, j]Qm, mMMu and zFKSU]. vpr-fl7.kim is a typical file name.

All the rest of the KIM files (27%) have different formats, often, for example, lertseK, hoven, HAIS and zSKIUe. Files like these are sometimes linked to basemap, unified or introduction. Just click the "Choose your .kim file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your KIM file is.
