All about KVS Files
The KVS file type is primarily associated with CRI ADX2.
What is a KVS file?
Some variants of the KVS files use GZIP compression. These files are handled by programs such as KVS Player that decompress the data and present the contained key-value information.
Another use of the KVS file is for storing machine configuration information. In this case, the file is used by Mitsubishi CNC Controllers to save settings and parameters in a key-value format. For more information on this application, visit Mitsubishi Electric.
How to open a KVS file
You need a suitable software like CRI ADX2 to open a KVS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your KVS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a KVS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

KVS file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the KVS files looks like this:
KVS is not a common file extension and predominantly uses a uniform format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 70% of all KVS files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "KOVS" at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are on average 1 MB in size and range from 32 KB to 5 MB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as OfeP, 8u\[n>?@ABCDEFG, KOVS, *+,-./, 334567, *+,-./0, JKMMNO and kqmBHQ#$%&%. The file name BG00_4ch.kvs is characteristic of these files. Such KVS files store data about boss, battle and murai.
- 7% of all KVS files are based on the well-known GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. KVS files can be up to 290 KB in size, but are often around 73 bytes - 290 KB.
All other KVS files (23%) have no consistent format, the following 3 formats can be found: MDC. These files are often connected to soundfont, trionfo or data. If you want to find out which format your KVS file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .kvs file to analyze".
