What is a KWD file?

KWD files mostly belong to Calligra Words. KWord documents and game data files share the KWD extension. In one case the file is a KWord document from the KOffice suite (used by Calligra Words), stored as a ZIP container. This means the document’s text, layout, images, and other media are packaged in a compressed archive.

If the file is a KWord document, it opens with Calligra Words. More details are available at Calligra.

Outside document use, some KWD files serve as game data. They hold game assets or settings for titles like Dungeon Keeper—often seen as KeeperFX data—and for Heroes of Might and Magic III. In one instance the file has also been noted as a keyword file for Krita, which may store tagging or classification data.

Inspect a suspected KWord document by opening it with a ZIP tool to view its XML and media files.

Run the corresponding game or mod tool if the file is game data.

Check file content to decide if it is for document or game use.

How to open KWD files

You need a suitable software like Calligra Words to open a KWD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your KWD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a KWD file directly in the browser:. If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the KWD files is as follows:

KWD is rarely used as a file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 35% of all KWD files are based on the zip format, multiple files are compressed and combined into one KWD file. KWD files contain from 4 to 11 compressed files. Common included file names are documentinfo.xml, maindoc.xml, mimetype and preview.png. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. The files are often between 5 KB and 1 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. maindoc.xml and mimetypeapplication/x-kwordPK. Such KWD files store data about days and nine.
• 15% of all KWD files use the same file format, which have the signature AA 00 00 00 04 00 00 00 56 D3 03. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. A typical file size is 250 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Imp_Run. The following filename is common: Creatures.kwd.
