What is a LAD file?

LAD files mostly belong to Fanuc Ladder-III Editor.

LAD files store ladder logic programs used in industrial control systems. They hold electrical control diagrams for PLCs. These diagrams use a ladder-like format with contacts, coils, and instructions to simulate relay logic.

The files can come in different internal formats. For example, some are stored as compressed ZIP files. They are created and edited with specialized software from companies such as Fanuc, CMH Software, RSLogix 5000, and Mitsubishi GX Developer.

How to open a LAD file

You need a suitable software like Fanuc Ladder-III Editor to open a LAD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. LAD file extension format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the LAD files produces the following result:

The LAD file extension is not widely used. Such a file includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in LAD files are:

• 15% of all LAD files have the same signature The Constructor Ladder Diagram File, by CMH Software. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are often between 37 KB and 86 KB in size. The keywords The Constructor Ladder Diagram File, by CMH Software and @F%%%%%%%%%% are typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to sheet and control.
• 15% of all LAD files use the ZIP format, i.e. a LAD file contains several compressed files. Most often they are 16 to 70 compressed files. File names are e.g. _SYSINF.TXT, CONTROL, IOMDLCMT, IOMODULE, LEVEL1.#LA, MAP.TXT, MESSAGE, NETCMT.000, OPTION, P1.#LA, SYSPARAM, TITLE, XSYMBOL.000, ZIPMEMBERINFO.TXT and ZipOwner. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The average file size is 62 KB with most files being between 10 KB and 140 KB in size. The files contain the following words: ZIPMEMBERINFO.TXTm. Such files sometimes refer to ladder.
