A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the LANG files is as follows:

You will often come across the LANG file type. This is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The file formats most commonly found in LANG files are:

• 25% of all LANG files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "LANG" at the beginning. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. Most of these files are 14 bytes to 23 bytes in size. The file type is relatively new. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as LANG. A usual file name is localization.lang.
• 20% of all LANG files save the data in UTF-8 file format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes  (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. A typical file size is 78 KB. The files contain the following words: language, ## Comments can be added anywhere on a valid line by starting with '##', ## Note, trailing spaces will NOT be trimmed.
