What is an LWI file

LWI files mostly belong to LightWorks. LightWorks image files (LWI) appear in two main roles. They are often used to store image data for 3D visualization and rendering.

LightWorks Image File: This type holds visual data created by LightWork Design LTD. It is used in workflows that involve complex 3D imaging. More details are available at the 3D Visualization SDK webpage.

LSMASHWorks Index: In some cases, a LWI file works as an index file. It contains metadata that helps multimedia applications organize video editing sessions.

Lightworks Workspace Index: Other LWI files store workspace settings for lossless video preview tasks. This function is useful in applications like LosslessCut.

How can I open an LWI file?

You need a suitable software like LightWorks to open an LWI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your LWI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a LWI file directly in the browser:. If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. The LWI file extension is rarely used and includes different formats for the applicable programs. But the following two file formats are common:

• 55% of all LWI files use the same file format, which have the signature 18 31 43 6F 70 79 72 69 67 68 74 5F 6C 69 67 68. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 24 KB to 260 KB. The file type was primarily used more than 20 years ago. The files contain the following words: 1Copyright_lightWork_Design_Limited:LightWorkImage, ppmtolwi, stdin and woll. The file name BRUSHED.LWI is characteristic of these files. Files like these are about brfm.
• 30% of all LWI files use the same file format, which have the signature 3C 4C. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are 22 KB to 25 MB in size, with a median of 1 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as InputFilePath, <LibavReaderIndexFile=13>, <LSMASHWorksIndexVersion=0.0.2.0> and ActiveVideoStreamIndex. -2020mix.mp3.lwi is a typical file name.
