What is a TGA file?

TGA files mostly belong to Preview by Apple. TGA is one of the filename extensions associated with images stored in the TARGA raster graphics file format that was originally used by TARGA and VISTA graphics cards. Image data with 8, 15, 16, 24, or 32-bits of precision per pixel can be stored in TGA format. The file is mainly divided into 5 sections beginning with the Header, and followed by the Image/Color map data, Developer area, Extension area, and the file footer. The footer section is typically used by version 2.0 of the TGA file format. The image data in TGA files are stored as uncompressed raw images or run-length compressed images. So, the images are lossless. You may open or edit TGA image files with programs such as Preview, Photoshop, Illustrator, PaintShop, GIMP, or Paint.NET. Video games such as RealFlight RC flight simulator also use this TGA format to store textures.

How to open a TGA file

You need a suitable software like Preview to open a TGA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TGA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TGA file directly in the browser:. TGA file format details:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the TGA files:

TGA is one of the most common file extensions and is primarily used by a single program. But the following two file formats are common:

85% of all TGA files belong to Truevision TGA/TARGA bitmap. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. TGA files are between 16 KB and 7 MB in size. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. These files can be linked to shot, wowscrn, body, snapshot, logo, icon, nfsmw, base, info and menu.
2% of all TGA files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "0E 00 02 00 00 00 00 00" at the beginning. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. A typical file size is 8 MB.

The remaining 13% of all TGA files are different files with different signatures, often, for example, PNG, DDS and Saved. These files are often connected to screen, loading, fascism, tintmap, lights, communism, catwoman, button, caust, blue, eyes or head.
