Opening an LZH File
The LZH file type is primarily associated with WinRAR.
What is an LZH file
- History: The LZH format was created after Microsoft adopted the functionality of LHA, a compression utility created by Haruyasu Yoshizaki in 1988. The Microsoft Compressed (LZH) Folder Add-on is a feature on the Japanese variant of Windows XP that enables the use of this compression technique to archive files and folders on the system. LZH archives were used once used by id Software to compress installation files of games such as Doom and Quake.
- Features: The LZH format uses the Lempel-Ziv and Haruyasu algorithm with Huffman encoding.
- Adoption: The format is similar to many other compression formats such as ZIP and RAR but is rarely used outside of Japan. Files with a LZH extension can still be used on non-Japanese versions of Windows but will require Winzip to decompress. There are ported versions of LHA available on different operating systems which use variants of the LZH compression technique.
How to open LZH files
You need a suitable software like WinRAR to open an LZH file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your LZH file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a LZH file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

LZH file extension format:
To view or edit LZH files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the LZH files:
An LZH file mainly uses a special format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 80% of all LZH files start with the magic bytes -lh, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. LZH files can be up to 540 MB in size, but are often around 11 KB - 12 MB. The file type was used 20 years ago but is still in use today. Files like these have the following tags: financia and data.
- 10% of all LZH files are using the well-known RAR file format to store the data. RAR is a proprietary archive file format that supports data compression, error correction and file spanning. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The file size is in the range of 41 KB to 540 KB. The keywords Rar! are typical for these files.
All other LZH files (10%) have no uniform format. Sometimes used for quotation or order. If you want to find out what your LZH file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

an lzh compressed archive is a special file format by WinRar and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with LZH files
- Associate the LZH file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open compressed archives. Because only the current version supports the latest LZH file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the WinRar manufacturer website after an available WinRAR update.
- To make sure that your LZH file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .LZH file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
