What is an LZX file
LZX files mostly belong to The Unarchiver by MacPaw. LZX files are files that are compressed using the algorithm of the same name. LZX algorithm belongs to the group of LZ77 compression algorithms.
- First Use: LZX files were first used in Amiga computers that date back to 1985 thus giving the file format the name, Amiga LZX file. Amiga LZX files are created with good compression ratios by making use of file merging where data is handled in blocks in place of individual compression.
- Later Usage: Microsoft's Cabinet Archiver of the mid-1990s was made more efficient with the use of the LZX compressed files. While Amiga LZX files had a fixed search window size of 64 KB, Microsoft LZX files had a varying search window with size range of 32 KB - 2048 KB. LZX compression format is also used in WIM (Windows Imaging Format), which is the format for Windows Vista and Windows 7 installation disks. LZX compression is also used on Microsoft's Xbox Live Avatar to achieve a reduction in bandwidth and file size.
How can I open an LZX file?
You need a suitable software like The Unarchiver to open an LZX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
