Opening MAE Files
The MAE file type is primarily associated with Sage/Maestro.
What is a MAE file?
How to open MAE files
You need a suitable software like Sage/Maestro to open a MAE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MAE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MAE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert MAE files:
- Sage/Maestro
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MAE files are often referred to as Sage/Maestro data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Maestro (Molecular Model) by Schrödinger, LLCMaestro is an all-purpose molecular modeling environment and the unified interface for all Schrödinger software.
MAE file extension format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our analysis of the MAE files produces the following result:
MAE is not a commonly used file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 25% of all MAE files use the same file format, which have the signature 00 07 00 00. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. A typical file size is 4 MB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The following keywords are characteristic: MA30CPTA. Files like these are about compta and comptabilite.
- 20% of all MAE files are associated with Maestro molecular model. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are on average 1 MB in size and range from 3 KB to 2 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. f_m_ct {, s_m_m2io_version, s_m_title, s_m_entry_id, s_m_entry_name, Index, s_m_Source_File, s_m_Source_Path and format.
All other MAE files (55%) have no uniform format, such as CPTA. These files sometimes refer to paroisse or ligprep. You can get all the details of your MAE file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .mae file to analyze" above.

How to solve problems with MAE files
- Associate the MAE file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open proprietary data files. Because only the current version supports the latest MAE file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Sage/Maestro update.
- To make sure that your MAE file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MAE file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
