All about MAK Files
The MAK file type is primarily associated with Microsoft Word.
What is a MAK file?
The MAK file is not a single type but has two main variants. One variant uses the ZIP compression format to store what are known as project makefiles. This type is linked with Microsoft Word and the related Microsoft Make system, where the file holds project and build instructions in a compressed archive.
The other variant uses an internal SQL format, making it an SQLite database file. This version stores structured data and can be viewed with tools designed for SQLite, as referenced on the SQLite website.
- ZIP-based variant: Look for a ZIP signature (often starting with 'PK') and use a standard archive tool to inspect the content.
- SQL-based variant: Use a SQLite viewer or editor to open and query the file.
FilExt.com tip: Even though these files share the MAK extension, their internal structure determines the proper tool and method for opening and viewing them.
How to open MAK files
You need a suitable software like Microsoft Word to open a MAK file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MAK file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MAK file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MAK format details:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the MAK files:
As a file extension, MAK isn't very common and covers a large number of different file formats. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 8% of all MAK files internally use the ZIP format, i.e. a MAK file contains several compressed files. Primarily 1 to 3 files are included. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. The files are on average 120 KB in size and range from 25 KB to 340 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: Bull.
- 6% of all MAK files save the data in SQL file format. An SQL file contains a lightweight SQLite database, widely used in application development for storing application related data. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. MAK files can be up to 49 KB in size, but are often around 12 KB - 32 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. SQLite format 3. Files like these have the following tags: akun.
All the rest of the MAK files (86%) have different formats, frequently e.g. Microsoft Developer Studio Generated NMAKE, Borland C+ and Visual Basic project. These files are often connected to makefile, configuration, checklst or common. If you want to find out which format your MAK file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .mak file to view".

How to solve problems with MAK files
- Associate the MAK file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open project makefiles. Because only the current version supports the latest MAK file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Microsoft Word update.
- To make sure that your MAK file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MAK file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
