What is a MAKEFILE file

MAKEFILE files mostly belong to make. Makefile files are used for build automation. They contain rules that define targets, dependencies, and commands to compile and link software. These files are plain text and must follow a strict syntax where command lines must be indented with a tab instead of spaces.
They are central to many build systems used in software development. The file instructs the build tool, such as make, on the steps required to assemble a project.

Text editors with syntax highlighting are recommended for viewing and editing these files.

Even a small misplacement of a tab or space can cause the build to fail.

How do you open MAKEFILE files?

You need a suitable software like make to open a MAKEFILE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MAKEFILE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. MAKEFILE files can be up to 1 KB in size, but are often around 190 bytes - 870 bytes. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as CFLAGS, Wall and gcc.
