Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MAPX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MAPX file directly in the browser:. MAPX file extension format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below is our analysis of the MAPX files:
MAPX is not a commonly used file extension and includes different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in MAPX files are:
- 35% of all MAPX files belong to ArcGIS Pro Map. The files are using the common file format JSON. JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data−interchange format. It is easy for humans to read and write. It is easy for machines to parse and generate. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. MAPX files are between 35 KB and 600 KB in size. It is a modern file type. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as "mapDefinition" : {, "type" : "CIMMap", "type" : "CIMMapDocument", CIMPATH, build, version, "name" : "Map" and "sourceModifiedTime" . A common filename is Map.mapx.
- 30% of all MAPX files use ZIP compression, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one MAPX file. The 14 to 140 compressed files are called [Content_Types].xml, [Content], metadata, \_rels\.rels, \Textures\, \files\DbVer.dat, \files\HeTDb.edb, \files\HeTDb.jfm, \files\edb.chk, \files\edb.log, \files\edbres1.jrs and \files\edbtmp.log. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. A typical file size is 32 MB. The keywords _rels/.rels, Effects/PK, Meshes/PK and Textures/PK are typical for these files. Examples of file names are 2020-06-01.mapx.
All other MAPX files (35%) have different formats, often e.g. HDF5, SQL and XML. The category is atlas. If you want to find out what your MAPX file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
