Opening MXD Files
The MXD file type is primarily associated with ArcMap.
What is an MXD file?
How to open MXD files
You need a suitable software like ArcMap to open an MXD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MXD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MXD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert MXD files:
- ArcMap by ESRI
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MXD files are often referred to as ArcMap raster images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

MXD file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the MXD files:
Files with the MXD extension are quite widely used. This file type predominantly uses a uniform format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 85% of all MXD files internally use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. This is a complex container format used by earlier versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows programs. Header signature for the CFB format with 8-byte Hex value D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). There is also a unique Windows component object identifier (CLSID) which is 87f7c9b8-6bd9-42cf-8c27-7ad2ca0102f0 or 006b1afe-c66c-11d0-b94c-080009ee4e51. The file contains several sections with names like Metadata, Document Info, Maps, PageLayout, UIControls, View, Accelerators, Contents, StyleGallery, Templates, Version, DataGraphs, DataWindows, TableProperties, DrawingDefaults, Toolbars, Tracking Analyst, DocumentDatabase, Esri Object Editor, Esri ArcToolbox and KM6J834ID6MP45VMMJ0JDMFIV2. The files are 290 KB to 4 MB in size, with a median of 950 KB. The file type is old but is used even today. Files like these are sometimes connected to sgispl, plan, percelenplannl, kadastraal, mapa, parcellairefr, project, figure and site.
- 4% of all MXD files start with the magic bytes |MxDz;1, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The files are on average 1 KB in size and range from 1.4 KB to 1.5 KB. The files contain the following words: MxDz. Some examples of file names are mids_build.mxd. These files are often associated with build, mids, brute, scrapper and fiery.
All other MXD files (11%) have no consistent format, often, for example, MX series Remote Control configuration, Hero and Villain. These files sometimes refer to blast, melee, radiation, luminous, nature, data or fire. Just click the "Choose your .mxd file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your MXD file is.
