Opening an MDG File
The MDG file type is primarily associated with Mindomo.
What is an MDG file?
It is mainly used as a Mindomo diagram file where the file holds the data for nodes, links, and layout details.
FilExt.com note: Always back up your file before making any manual changes, especially if you edit its JSON text directly.
How to open MDG files
You need a suitable software like Mindomo to open an MDG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MDG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MDG file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert MDG files:
- Mindomo
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MDG files are often referred to as Mindomo data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Mindomo, MicroStationThe *.mdg file extension has two main uses. Primarily, it is associated with Mindomo, an online mind-mapping and diagramming tool. These *.mdg files store diagrams created within Mindomo, saving the layout, content, and formatting of the mind map. JSON is the internal file format used for these files. Alternatively, the *.mdg extension can also represent MicroStation drawing files, used by Bentley Systems' MicroStation CAD software for creating 2D and 3D designs. MobiDrive Guard also uses this extension. This file format is classified as Diagram or CAD file.
MDG file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the MDG files looks like this:
The MDG file extension is not common and predominantly uses a uniform format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 75% of all MDG files are based on the popular JSON file format. JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data−interchange format. It is easy for humans to read and write. It is easy for machines to parse and generate. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The files are often between 35 KB and 180 KB in size. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. The following keywords are characteristic: lines, color, defaultColor, style, firstPoint, secondPoint, blue and selectionColor. Examples of file names are - (1).mdg.
- 10% of all MDG files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "06 00 00 00 3E 00 00 00 12" at the beginning. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The average file size is 400 KB with most files being between 340 KB and 930 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: M-Draf Spirit.
The remaining 15% of all MDG files are different files with different signatures. You can get all the details of your MDG file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .mdg file to analyze" above.
Technical Data for MDG File Extension
an mdg diagram file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with MDG files
- Associate the MDG file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open diagram files. Because only the current version supports the latest MDG file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Mindomo update.
- To make sure that your MDG file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MDG file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
