Opening an MMAP File
The MMAP file type is primarily associated with MindManager.
What is an MMAP file?
- Main Use: Mindjet MindManager is a mind-mapping application used for capturing brainstorming sessions, business strategy planning, and other similar tasks. MMAP files are used by MindManager to store the mind-mapping data that consists of a complex assembly of diagrams and text reflecting the 'mind map' of the event in the planner's head.
- Additional Information: The data in an MMAP file is stored in a ZIP archive format that consists of the directory level information of all the resource files belonging to the mind map. These resource files include the main document.xml XML file, preview.png PNG preview image, a list of XML files within the xsd subfolder and the left-over embedded images/objects saved as BIN files. Some web browsers save MMAP files in the ZIP file format. The ZIP file extension can be changed back to MMAP, once the file is locally downloaded onto the computer.
How do you open MMAP files?
You need a suitable software like MindManager to open an MMAP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MMAP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MMAP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MMAP file extension format:
To find out what program is needed to open MMAP files, you need to determine the file format. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the MMAP files comes to the following conclusion:
The MMAP extension is very commonly used. This MMAP file itself is among the most popular common file types and predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 95% of all MMAP files use ZIP compression, so several files are combined and compressed into one MMAP file. Primarily 7 to 16 files are included. File names inside are Document.xml, Preview.png, \bin\, \xsd\MindManagerApplication.xsd, \xsd\MindManagerCore.xsd, \xsd\MindManagerDelta.xsd and \xsd\MindManagerPrimitive.xsd. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. MMAP files are between 31 KB and 460 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: Document.xmlMJHI and http://schemas.mindjet.com/MindManager/Delta/2003. Files like these are sometimes connected to mind, mindmap, process, analysis, plan, management, structure and data.
- 1% of all MMAP files start with the magic bytes 00 00 00 00, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. A typical file size is 150 KB. Some examples of file names are MidasLog.mmap.
The remaining 4% of all MMAP files are files with no common format, often e.g. XML. They are often associated with security, order, project, domain, paper or passo. You can get all the details of your MMAP file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .mmap file to analyze" above.
