Opening a MEI File
The MEI file type is primarily associated with Verovio.
What is a MEI file?
Music Encoding Initiative file: This variant is an XML based format designed for detailed music score markup. It encodes notes, rhythms, and other musical symbols so that software can render or print accurate scores. Applications such as Verovio and MuseScore support these files. For more details, you can visit the Verovio website.
Moving Entis Image file: In some cases the MEI extension is used for image data associated with the Entis Rasterizer. This type handles moving or dynamic images.
Metasys Encrypted Image: Another usage is as a ZIP container holding encrypted image data. This format is part of firmware update packages from Johnson Controls' Metasys Network Engine. More information is available at the Johnson Controls website.
How can I open a MEI file?
You need a suitable software like Verovio to open a MEI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MEI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MEI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MEI file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the MEI files is as follows:
MEI is not a common file extension and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 35% of all MEI files are Music Encoding Initiative format files, which are using the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. MEI files are between 3 KB and 270 KB in size. The keywords <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, <?xml-model hre and <?xml-model href="http://music-encoding.org/schema/4.0.0/mei-all.rng" type="application/xml" schematypens="http://relaxng.org/ns/structure/1.0"?> are typical for these files.
- 20% of all MEI files use the same file format, which have the signature Entis. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are often between 13 MB and 98 MB in size. The files contain the following words: Entis, FileHdr, ImageInfD, Moving Entis Image and Header. A usual file name is opening.mei.
All other MEI files (45%) have different formats, such as XML and ZIP. Sometimes used for dmeref. If you want to find out what your MEI file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with MEI files
- Associate the MEI file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open encoded music notation files. Because only the current version supports the latest MEI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Verovio update.
- To make sure that your MEI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MEI file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
