Opening a MEX File
The MEX file type is primarily associated with Macro Express.
What is a MEX file?
- Main Use: Macro Express is a Microsoft Windows compatible application that is used in the recording, editing, and playing back of macros created using keyboard strokes and mouse clicks. Macro Express uses MEX files to facilitate the automation of repetitive tasks in Windows PCs. Each MEX file consists of macros i.e scripts and commands, that are auto-executed when run. Some MEX files come pre-installed with the software and have the file name sample.mex.
- Other Uses: MEX files are also used by MATLAB, a scientific computing application developed by Mathworks and is used for developing algorithms, plotting graphs, analyzing data, and performing numeric calculations. These MEX files contain dynamically linked subroutines used by the macOS version of MATLAB software. MEX files are also used as data files by the Corel WordPerfect software that is bundled with the Corel WordPerfect Office suite. These MEX files store expound data that can be utilized by Macro Editor present in the Corel WordPerfect application.
How to open a MEX file
You need a suitable software like Macro Express to open a MEX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MEX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MEX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert MEX files:
- Macro Express by Insight Software Solutions
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MEX files are often referred to as Macro Express data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- MCUXpresso (project configuration file) by NXPMCUXpresso software development kit (MCUXpresso SDK) is a software suite developed for NXP Microcontrollers and includes peripheral drivers, multicore support, USB stack, and integrated real time operating system support for FreeRTOS. MEX file is the project configuration file. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: Reference Manual, User Guide, Community Support
- WordPerfect (expound data file) by CorelCorel WordPerfect is a word processing software and part of the WordPerfect Office suite, developed first for DOS, later for Unix, then Mac OS, and finally for Windows OS. The MEX files contain expound data. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: WordPerfect on Wikipedia, Tutorials, Manuals and Guides
MEX file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the MEX files looks like this:
The MEX file extension is not widely used. Such a file includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in MEX files:
- 15% of all MEX files save the data in Java file format. This format is used to save Java objects to a file (ex. save game state as file) via object serialization. Such a Java object may contain functions and data like settings, images or videos. The contents of these files are partially readable by a human. Most of these files are 13 KB to 290 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: Ljava/lang/String;L, Ljava/util/GregorianC, authorNamet, dateCreatedt, displayAnswersI, examDurationZ, excelentities.ExamExcel, mrqI, numberOfQuestionsI, passMarkZ, takenZ and theoryL. An example of a file name is GSE202EXAM.mex or AGY303.mex. These files can be linked to exam.
- 8% of all MEX files are associated with Macro Express Macro. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. MEX files are between 7 KB and 210 KB in size.
The remaining 77% of all MEX files are files with no common format, the following 5 formats can be found: XML and EXE. These files sometimes refer to tarama, kiranlar, macderkenuyari, gentarama or level. If you want to find out which format your MEX file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .mex file to analyze".

a mex macro is a special file format by Insight Software Solutions and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with MEX files
- Associate the MEX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open macros. Because only the current version supports the latest MEX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Insight Software Solutions manufacturer website after an available Macro Express update.
- To make sure that your MEX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MEX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
