What is a MAR file?

MAR files mostly belong to Access by Microsoft. A MAR file is a shortcut to a report in a database created with Access relational database management system. A MAR file isn't an actual report. It is created by dragging an Access report to the desktop. As such, a MAR file only contains a link to a report. Users can double-click such a file to directly access a report. Another type of MAR file is an archive containing information used to update Mozilla software products such as Firefox and Thunderbird. WebSphere Business Modeler uses a MAR file to store a process model template.

How to open a MAR file

You need a suitable software like Access to open a MAR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MAR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MAR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MAR format details:

To find out what program is needed to open MAR files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the MAR files comes to the following conclusion:

As a file extension, MAR isn't very common and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

All other MAR files (20%) have no consistent format. If you want to find out what your MAR file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with MAR files

  • Associate the MAR file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open report shortcuts. Because only the current version supports the latest MAR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Access update.
  • To make sure that your MAR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .MAR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
