What is an MF file?

MF files mostly belong to Panda3D by Carnegie Mellon University. An MF file is the manifest of a JAVA application packaged into a JAR archive. A manifest file contains a list of the pathnames to all files in a JAR archive. Another type of MF file contains a raster font description used by LaTeX document typesetting system. An MF font description is written in Metafont font description language. MF is also the filename extension of a makerfile used by FrameMaker technical content authoring/publishing software. ZEMAX optical engineering software uses an MF file to store merit functions. Panda3D game development engine saves game assets (images, videos etc.) in an MF file.

How to open MF files

You need a suitable software like Panda3D to open an MF file. If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the MF files comes to the following conclusion:

The MF file extension is quite widespread and is primarily used by a single program. But the following two file formats are common:

70% of all MF files are Java Manifest files. These files contain text and words, not binary data. MF files can be up to 2 MB in size, but are often around 64 bytes - 120 KB. The file type is old but is used even today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Manifest-Version: 1.0, Created-By, Name and SHA1-Digest. An example of a file name is Manifest.mf.
3% of all MF files start with the magic bytes pmf, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 350 KB to 410 MB. These files are attributed to phase.

The remaining 27% of all MF files are different files with different signatures, the following 8 formats exist: OVA Manifest, SQL, XML, RAPORT, OvrkixBju and allowPivoting.
