Opening MHA Files
The MHA file type is primarily associated with ITK-SNAP.
What is an MHA file
This file holds detailed metadata about medical images, including dimensions, voxel spacing, and data type information. It often contains both the header information and the associated image data within a single file.
Specialized medical tools such as ITK-SNAP and 3D Slicer, as well as software like ImFusion, use the MHA format to load, analyze, and segment 3D scans from modalities like CT and MRI.

How to open MHA files
You need a suitable software like ITK-SNAP to open an MHA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MHA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MHA file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert MHA files:
- ITK-SNAP
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MHA files are often referred to as ITK-SNAP data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- ITK (ITK MetaImage) by InsightMHA graphic data files contain the information regarding the Insight Segmentation and Registration Toolkit (ITK). ITK stands for Insight Segmentation and Registration Toolkit. ITK is a royalty free, cross-platform system. It was designed for the purpose of providing developers with an extensive suite of software tools. ITK provides tools for image analysis.
MHA format details:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the MHA files:
The MHA extension is quite commonly used. The file itself mainly uses a special format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 96% of all MHA files start with the bytes ObjectType = Image, which are crucial for this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. Most of these files are 44 KB to 27 MB in size. It is a modern file type. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as ObjectType = Image, BinaryData = True, BinaryDataByteOrderMSB = False, Offset, NDims = 3, TransformMatrix = 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1, CompressedData = True, CompressedDataSize and CenterOfRotation. Examples of file names are VSD.Brain.XX.O.MR_Flair.54193.mha or VSD.Brain.XX.O.MR_Flair.54512.mha. Such MHA files store data about brain, flair, normal, image, more, patient, prostate and flash.
- 4% of all MHA files use the same file format, which have the signature NDims = . They consist of unreadable binary data. Most of these files are 150 bytes to 8 MB in size. The files contain the following words: DimSize, NDims = 3, ElementType = MET_UCHAR, ElementSpacing, Offset, ElementByteOrderMSB = False and ElementDataFile. The following filename is common: aaa0044-T2-AXIAL-SM-FOV_HECaP.mha. These files are often associated with axial and hecap.

Technical Data for MHA File Extension
an mha Header file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with MHA files
- Associate the MHA file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open header files. Because only the current version supports the latest MHA file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available ITK-SNAP update.
- To make sure that your MHA file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MHA file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
