What is an MJS file

MJS files mostly belong to NodeJS by OpenJS Foundation. MJS is the recommended filename extension of ECMAScript (JavaScript) modules used in NodeJS applications. NodeJS is a JavaScript runtime which allows the execution of JavaScript code outside a browser. An MJS file is essentially the same as a JS script. However, runtimes like NodeJS, d8, and build tools like Webpack and Babel treat MJS scripts different than traditional JS scripts. This is because MJS scripts are only directly/indirectly imported into an entry point (usually index.js or main.js) of an application. Module MJS modules also make it easy to tell modules apart from classic scripts at a glance.

How can I open an MJS file?

You need a suitable software like NodeJS to open an MJS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MJS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MJS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert MJS files:

  1. NodeJS by OpenJS Foundation
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MJS files are often referred to as NodeJS web (source)s because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. 7400 Costing (database) by Mijas Software
7400 Costing is a discontinued program for PCs. It saves a database as an MJS file. This file format is classified as Database.
  3. Visual Studio Code (module) by Microsoft
Visual Studio Code is a cross-platform code editor featuring a debugger for JavaScript code. It can create and edit a JavaScript module saved in an MJS file. This file format is classified as Web (source). Related links: A note on file extensions, JavaScript modules

MJS file format:

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the MJS files looks like this:

As a file extension, MJS isn't very common and mainly uses a special format. The file formats most commonly found in MJS files are:

The remaining 10% of all MJS files are different files with different signatures. Just click the "Choose your .mjs file to view" button on this page to find out what your MJS file is.

an mjs module is a special file format by OpenJS Foundation and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with MJS files

  • Associate the MJS file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open modules. Because only the current version supports the latest MJS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the OpenJS Foundation manufacturer website after an available NodeJS update.
  • To make sure that your MJS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .MJS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
