What is an MLT file

MLT files mostly belong to Shotcut. MLT files are used as project files in video editing.
They store the editing timeline, media references, effects, and transitions in an XML structure.
In Shotcut, an open‐source video editor, the MLT file holds the project settings and is essential for reloading a video project.
Some MLT files use a RIFF format for AVI projects by Media Lovin' Toolkit, and a few can define a Maya LT scene for Autodesk's MotionBuilder.

How to open an MLT file

You need a suitable software like Shotcut to open an MLT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MLT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MLT file directly in the browser:. A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the MLT files comes to the following conclusion:

MLT is a very commonly used file extension and is primarily used by a single program. The following file formats are most commonly found in MLT files:

• 85% of all MLT files are Shotcut project files, which are based on the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files contain text and words, not binary data. The file size is in the range of 580 bytes to 34 KB. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. title, <mlt LC_NUMERIC="C", width, producer, height, main_bin, <profile description="automatic", Shotcut version 20, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>, <profile description="PAL, PAL 4 and <?xml version="1.0" standalone="no"?>. These files are often associated with movie, video, edit, project, first, youtube, shotcut, intro and roblox.
• 4% of all MLT files are based on the popular RIFF file format. RIFF files store data in tagged chunks. There are primarily used to store multimedia such as sound and video. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are 2 MB to 120 MB in size, with a median of 48 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. LISTt, MJPG, hdrlavih8, strf(, strlstrh8, vidsMJPG, AVI LIST and RIFF. The file name PLOT0001.MLT or PLOT0004.MLT is characteristic of these files.
