What is an EDL file?

EDL files mostly belong to Final Cut by Apple. An EDL file is a edit decision list used by video editing programs such as Premiere, Final Cut, Pro Tools, and Media Composer. An edit decision list contains information pertaining to an editor's choice(s) for a video project. This information is usually stored as text representing a shot-by-shot layer of the timeline; each line describing an edit. The shots in the file are saved as on ordered list of reel and timecode for each conformed clip in the project. Using an EDL file makes it easy to transfer and recreate a project in a different editing software or system. While EDL (edit decision list) files are typically saved as text, some programs may encode the file in XML, AviSynth script, or AAF format. EDL is also the filename extension of an obsolete synthesized audio format used by EDlib sound chip emulator.

How to open an EDL file

You need a suitable software like Final Cut to open an EDL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EDL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EDL file directly in the browser:.
