Opening an MLX File
The MLX file type is primarily associated with MATLAB.
What is an MLX file?
How to open MLX files
You need a suitable software like MATLAB from MathWorks to open an MLX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MLX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MLX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MLX format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the MLX files is as follows:
MLX is not a common file extension and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 75% of all MLX files internally use the ZIP format, that is, an MLX file includes multiple compressed files. Primarily 7 to 18 files are included. File names inside are always [Content_Types].xml, \_rels\.rels, \matlab\document.xml, \matlab\output.xml, \metadata\coreProperties.xml, \metadata\mwcoreProperties.xml, \metadata\mwcorePropertiesExtension.xml and \metadata\mwcorePropertiesReleaseInfo.xml. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. Most of these files are 3 KB to 650 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: [Content_Types].xml. The file name README.mlx or ex1.mlx is typical for these files. Such MLX files store data about assignment.
- 15% of all MLX files are based on the popular JetDB file format. The JetDB is a database format often used by Microsoft Access and Visual Basic programs. JET is short for Joint Engine Technology. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are 820 KB to 71 MB in size, with a median of 1 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: Standard Jet DB. The file name DBSYSTEM.mlx is typical for these files.
The remaining 10% of all MLX files are different files with different signatures. If you want to find out what your MLX file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

an mlx live script/function is a special file format by MathWorks and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with MLX files
- Associate the MLX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open live script/functions. Because only the current version supports the latest MLX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the MathWorks manufacturer website after an available MATLAB update.
- To make sure that your MLX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MLX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
